Realm of the Shtupman I

A journal of sorts. This is the tale of a man of little consequence published at the end of the last century.

I generally don't cry while reading the morning papers, but this morning I shed a tear. A full page ad taken out by the Japanese American Citizens League. The half-page picture is a montage of various things…two kids, an old, proud man, a stark internment camp, a scrawled "Japs keep out you rats" on the side of a building. There's a watermark effect of the Japanese flag (a big dot on a field of white. Simple, elegant.) The copy:

It must not happen again.

To anyone ever.

Well meaning people once decided it was perfectly fine to discriminate. Just this one time, and only against one small minority.
That's not prejudice, they said. It's necessary to save our traditional way of life.

So they suspended the constitutional rights of 120,000 American citizens.

The Honolulu Chapter of the Japanese Citizens League says we must never make any group an exception to our constitutional rights. Ever.

Vote NO on the Constitutional Amendment on November 3rd.

A bit of background now. The religious right has decided that the Hawaii state constitution MUST be changed to read that the legislature has the right to determine who can and cannot marry in this state. It's a huge and significant breach of the "checks and balances" system that guarantees this government will continue to function as a democracy. The language in this amendment is quite vague, and sets an impressive precedent which successfully circumvents the Supreme Court.

You see, the Supreme Court told the legislature they had to give a compelling reason why marriage should be restricted to between one man and one woman. Their answer was "Procreation." The underlying reason was the far right. The whole thing has gotten me SO pissed off. As Annie Lenox sings "I was bitter when I met you, I was eloquent with rage. Like honey from a poison cup, I flow from stage to stage…"

I don't listen to the radio, cuz I hear the "Stupid and proud of it" interview ad constantly. It's a well modulated voice and a dumb local woman having a conversation about same-sex marriage and what a vex it would be. It's unnecessary. The Ecumenical Council even went so far as to post its own ads saying "Guys, what you are doing is gay bashing. Stop it, okay? You're acting like children."

I couldn't agree more. I am so sick of it.

Frankly, I don't really give a rats ass if gays are allowed to marry or not. The tax bennies would be nice, and I would like to carry RR on my health insurance (I have a 'real' job; he does not) but aside from all that, the concept of marriage escapes me. I got a guy. I love him…a lot. We've been putting up with each other's shit for 13 or so years. That says more than any piece of paper.

"Hey! Is it my turn? You want me to sing now? WAAAA!" Go and listen to Eurythmics' Savage CD. It really matches my mood right now. "I need a man!"
