"Just a perfect day,
you made me forget myself
I thought I was someone else--
Someone good."
--Lou Reed
I fear the significance of the previous quote will be lost on a great many people who haven't seen the movie "Trainspotting." This flick is a couple of years old, and follows the lives of three Scottish youth (none circumcised…yummy!) as they fly through a heroin shrouded existence. I absolutely do not condone the use of illicit drugs, and I think this film helps to drive the message home. The opening credits ask the viewer to:
"Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a big television. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disk players, and electrical tin openers. Choose sitting on the couch watching mind-numbing, spirit crushing game shows.
"People think it's all about misery and desperation and death and all that shit which is not to be ignored, but what they forget is the pleasure of it. Otherwise, we wouldn't do it. After all, we're not fucking stupid."
"We're not fucking stupid." Indeed not, merely misguided. This film is an examination of the breakdown of modern society, how we bumble thru life under an outmoded judicial system, and set of mores and morals. It's really gross, and graphic, but then aren't most of life's important lessons?
I take great pleasure in the fact that my brother is going to preserve the family gene pool. (btw, I've only the one sibling, and he is 9 years younger than I.) He has a really cute wife, and they will produce a lovely blonde baby soon. That's really good, cuz there aint anything worse than an ugly baby. I guess this means that I will now be "Uncle Bob…the kiddies friend! (Let's not go there….)
Was going to talk about attitude and sunsets today, but I think tomorrow will produce a better venue for that discussion. I just don't feel overly worldly and philosophical today…it all got sucked out of me at work discussing our mutual fatigue. I've grown tired. Anyway, it will be fun to post a revision to this page while the sun is up.
