Todd sez that I should make this thingie decidedly Hawaiian. Therefore, I shall share the music that has been running through my mind all day. Normally, when I get these songs stuck in my mind, it drives me batty, but this one has been quite pleasant. First, as it is sung, then the translation for the non-kanaka:
Makaha Sons of Niihau, off their album, Hooluana. The lyrics are kind of a downer, but the sentiment is nice. Like I said, I've had it going thru my head all day, Israel Kamakawiwoole's voice like a sweet breeze. RR can't handle Hawaiian music in very large doses, but since I hear it at work all day long, I have become sensitized to it's rhythm. BTW, in case you were wondering, no, I do not speak Hawaiian with any fluency. The words come from the CD liner notes.
Torch Song Trilogy....Harvey Feierstein's masterpiece. The thing is indelibly etched in my mind. It's kind of like having songs go through your mind endlessly. This movie has a rather macabre association for me, though. The whole thing is a very pretty romantic comedy involving Harvey who plays a drag queen, and a very cute and young Matthew Broderick, who is his love interest. At one point, the music swells, and poor, dear Matthew is having the shit beat out of him by some punks. At that moment, when Harvey sees the love of his life pull away in an ambulance, My mother called and informed me of the death of my Grandfather. (this was several years ago, btw.) I still get a knot in my stomach when I see that scene, and listen for the phone to ring. I watched it on Bravo earlier tonight, thus the reason for the late night update. I also became upset tonight, and cried at the kitchy ending.

Ua mehameha au
A'ohe hoaloha
Ua nui na makahiki
A hele aku ho'i au.
I'ini au ia oe e noho
Ina a'ole, ua hiki no
E hi'ipoi mau no wau ia oe
Aloha mau no wau ia oe.
E hele au ma ke kai
E luana me ka'ae kai
Ke one ho'i ua hoolu mai
Holoi ai ku'u waimaka.

Why am I alone,
Got no friends.
It's been many years
and someday I'll be gone
I wish you could stay
but if you can't, don't try
I'll always caress you
I'll always love you.
I'll go by the sea
To pass the time with the tide
The sands comfort me
And wipe my tears away.
